Areno-oxazinone compounds of general formula wherein R represents the radical of a mono- or poly-nuclear, homocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic ring system which is linked with the 2-position of the oxazinone ring by way of a ring of said system not containing nitrogen, and A represents the divalent radical of a mono- or poly-nuclear homocyclic aromatic ring system, the bonds of which are in the O-position which ring systems can optionally contain substituents which remain unchanged under the reaction conditions, are prepared by condensing an acid halide of formula R-CO-X with an O- hydroxy carboxylic acid amide of formula in which X represents chlorine or bromine, the condensation being performed at raised temperature while splitting off and removing hydrogen halide and water. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of up to 0À2 equivalents of a tertiary nitrogen base or of a tertiary amide of a low fatty acid acting as reaction accelerators, and in a boiling aprotic organic solvent which acts as a water entrainer. |
