A process for the oxidation of hydrocarbons, alcohols and/or ketones to carboxylic acids using O2, or an O2-containing gas, in the liquid phase and in a polar protic or aprotic solvent in the presence of a soluble catalyst. This comprises soluble compounds of Co and Cr. The preferred hydrocarbons are 5-12C cycloalkanes, and more preferably cyclohexane. The preferred alcohols and/or ketones are the 5-12C cycloalkanols and cycloalkanones, more preferably cyclohexanol and/or cyclohexanone.
