PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for recognizing a very high speed data communication system are provided to judge whether a very high speed data communication network exists by a base ID in a system parameter. CONSTITUTION: An 1xEv-DO(Evolution Data Only) terminal(210) receives a system parameter message from a connected IS-95 A/B system(202) or CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access)-2000 1x system(204). The 1xEv-DO terminal(210) checks a base ID field in the received system parameter message. The 1xEv-DO terminal(210) judges whether an 1xEv-DO system(206) exists by an idle bit in the checked base ID field. If the 1xEv-DO system(206) exists, the 1xEv-DO terminal(210) connects to the 1xEv-DO system(206).
