PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polymer latex which can safely produce a polymer latex having a particle diameter of≤60 nm without forming agglomerate even in the case of a monomer containing 1,3-butadiene, furthermore at a high polymerization conversion with efficiency. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polymer latex having a number average particle diameter of≤60 nm comprises polymerizing a monomer with the use of 0.01-0.5 pt.wt., based on 100 pts.wt. monomer, 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene at a maximum value of the instantaneous polymerization rate in the range of 10-45 wt.%/hr.
