PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon fibers comprising aggregates of filament carbon nanofibers and carbon nanofibers obtained from the carbon fibers and to provide a technology producing the aggregates with high quality and high yield in an industrial scale. SOLUTION: The carbon fibers comprise the aggregates of filament carbon nanofibers and carbon nanofibers are obtained by grinding the same. The precursor fibers for the carbon fibers that are fibers of blended polymers and the morphology of the fiber has a stream-like phase separation structures along the fiber axis and the vertical section of the fiber axis has a phase separation structure in which island like isolated phases are scattered in a matrix phase, and the matrix phase polymer comprises a thermally decomposable polymer and the island like isolated phase mainly comprises a polyacrylonitrile based polymer.
