PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor which emits blue light with a high luminance, while hardly undergoing luminance degradation, under the excitation by vacuum ultraviolet rays with wavelengths of 200 nm or less and which is excellent in color purity of emitted light; its paste composition; and a vacuum ultraviolet ray-excitable luminous element which undergoes little luminance degradation and sustains light emission in a high efficiency. SOLUTION: This alkaline earth aluminate phosphor is represented by the formula: aMIIO 6Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>:Eu<SB>b</SB>, MIII<SB>c</SB>(wherein MII is at lesat one alkaline earth element selected from among Ba, Sr, and Ca; MIII is at least one element selected from among Ga, Ce, Tm, Yb and Bi; a, b and c are each a number satisfying: 0.9≤a≤1.8; 0<b<1; and 0<c≤2).
