<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain compatibility of a high battery output and life characteristics for deep discharge, since the high battery output is required to cope with frequent restart of an engine and heavy discharge such as driving a motor and driving auxiliaries is carried out, in a control valve type lead-acid battery used for an idling stop vehicle and a hybrid vehicle. <P>SOLUTION: The specific surface area of 5.0 m<SP>2</SP>/g-8.0 m<SP>2</SP>/g is set for a positive electrode active material and the specific surface area of 0.80 m<SP>2</SP>/g-1.4 m<SP>2</SP>/g is set for a negative electrode active material. A high pressure of 500 kg/dm<SP>2</SP>or higher is applied to a group of electrodes each of which is formed by interposing a mat separator containing glass fiber as a main component between a positive electrode and a negative electrode with the group of electrodes stored in a battery jar.
