PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately calibrate a polarimeter. SOLUTION: The polarimeter is accurately calibrated by using an input light signal(calibration polarization) where four polarization states are known and at least one more polarization state. All polarization states inputted to the polarimeter have power that is identically normalized and the same polarizing angle. A Stokes matrix for four calibration polarization is generated with at least one variable correction parameter, and a correction matrix is determined from the Stokes matrix and the corresponding detector current matrix measured by the polarimeter. The optimum value of criteria that is a function of the polarizing angle in the polarization state is generated in measurement by the polarimeter. The correction parameter is repeatedly changed to minimize the criteria, thus calibrating the polarimeter so that uniform power and polarizing angle are generated even if input is made in any polarization state.
