Receptor/reporter fusion protein based assays for detecting an effect test compounds have on a particular membrane receptor, wherein the receptor is a constitutively active mutant membrane receptor, said assay comprising the steps of: (a) adding the test compound to a cell expressing the fusion protein; and (b) detecting any change in the activity or level of the fusion protein, said change being due to the binding of a compound which affects stability of the constitutively active mutant receptor protein, thus altering the activity or level of the reporter protein in the cell.
