A hydrocarbon feedstock is converted to a mixture of high ethylene and/or propylene content by passing the feed in the presence of steam through a fluidized bed of particles of a stable catalyst composition, which is resistant to temperatures of 650-900‹ C. and superatmospheric pressure, formed by sintering refractory oxides of which not more than a minor proportion by weight are readily reducible, where the particles are of restricted porosity and have a specific surface of 0À02-10 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and where the catalysts are not regenerated. Preferred catalyst compositions comprise by wt. 30-70% MgO, 25-40% Zr 2 O and 1-4À5% rare earth oxide or 50-70% MgO, not more than 20% Al 2 O 3 and a minor proportion of ferric or ferrosoferric oxides. The feedstock may be introduced at 200-600‹ C. into the fluidized bed at 650-900‹ C. and up to 50 bars absolute. The weight ratio of steam to carbon in the feedstock may be 0À5-4 : 1.</p> |
