PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dimming device which is reduced in generation of a liquid crystal alignment defect, can improve an optical functionality, and has high reliability as a product and an imaging device which can improve performance, picture quality, and reliability by arranging the dimming device in an optical path. SOLUTION: A dimming device is equipped with a liquid crystal element such that a liquid crystal material is charged between a couple of base bodies each having an electrode and a liquid crystal alignment film and at least one of the base bodies and the electrode transmit light and then characterized in that (the distance between the circumference of the electrode and a liquid crystal injection hole)/(the distance between the center part of a liquid crystal charged area and the liquid crystal injection hole) is≥0.25. A dimming device has a structure, deflecting the injection direction of the liquid crystal material, installed between the electrode and liquid crystal injection hole. Further, the imaging device has those dimming devices arranged in the optical path of an imaging system. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
