A method for the preparation of 5-cyanophthalide (Formula IV) comprising reaction at an elevated temperature of 5-carboxyphthalide (Formula III) with a dehydrating agent and a sulfonamide of the formula H2N-SO2-R where R is: i) NH2, alkoxy, phenyloxy; ii) Phenyloxy substituted with halogen, alkyl, cyano, hydroxy, alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, nitro, amino, alkylamino or dialkylamino; iii) Phenyl substituted with one or more electron withdrawing substituents. Also described is 5-cyanophthalide when prepared by the above-described method. Also described is a method for the preparation of citalopram or an enantiomer thereof using 5-cyanophthalide prepared by the above-described method; and the citalopram thus prepared is also described.
