PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of production for 4,4'-dihydroxy-diphenyl ethers using a solid acid catalyst with high selectivity for the objective 4,4'- dihydroxydiphenyl ethers in high reaction conversion and suppressing production of by product such as polycyclic hycroquinones. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl ethers comprises dehydrative dimerization of the hydroquinones in an organic solvent which is immiscible with water and produces an azeotropicmixture with water, e.g. mesitylene, using activated clays with≥3 wt.%, preferably with 5-20 wt.% of water content as the catalyst.
