<p>A tree and lighting system (1) for lighting a tree comprising: a tree (15) for outdoor use; a string of decorative electrical lights (5) for decorating the tree (15), the lights (5) being connected along an electrical supply cable (10) which encircled the exterior of the tree (15), the electrical supply cable (10) terminating in a transformer (20); a switch (30) operable between a first open state in which the cable is open circuit and electrical current cannot flow, and a second closed state in which the cable is closed circuit and electrical current can flow through the cable to the lights (5); a switch control unit (35) to operate the switch (30), including a light detector (40) to detect the level of ambient light, wherein the switch (30), switch control unit (35) and light detector (40) are built into the transformer (20) for outdoor use; and where, in use when the electrical supply cable (10) is connected to a source of electrical supply, the switch control unit (35) causes the switch (30) to enter the second closed state when the light level detected by the detector (40) is less than a predetermined level.</p> |
