New indenoindolone compounds, a process for their preparation and pharmaceutical compositions containing them

Indenoindolone compounds of formula (I) are described, wherein: R is H, optionally substituted alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, NR10R11 or alkenyl, R1 to R8 is H, optionally substituted alkyl, hydroxy, acyloxy, NR12R13, carboxy, optionally substituted alkoxy, alkenyloxy, or two of R1 to R8 together form alkylenedioxy, X is oxygen or NR16, and R9 is H, aryl, heteroaryl or optionally substituted alkyl. The compounds are used in the manufacture of medicaments for use as anti-cancer agents.
