PURPOSE: An optical recorder/player and television combination system and a method of controlling a caption displaying operation of the system are provided to operate only caption processing of the operation mode selected by a user. CONSTITUTION: An optical recorder/player and television combination system includes an optical system caption processor(300), a television caption data processor(400), an input unit(100), and a controller(200). The optical system caption processor processes a video signal reproduced by the optical recorder/player to display caption data included in the video signal on a television screen. The television caption data processor processes a broadcasting signal and the caption data to display the broadcasting signal and the caption data on the television screen. The input unit receives a user's command of selecting a television mode or a video signal reproduction mode. The controller controls the optical system caption processor and the television caption data processor to operate the optical system caption processor when the command for selecting the video signal reproduction mode is input and to operate the television caption data processor when the command for selecting the television mode is input.
