PURPOSE: A process for preparing (R)-3,4-epoxy-1-butanol is provided, thereby cheaply preparing (R)-3,4-epoxy-1-butanol in higher yield. CONSTITUTION: A process for preparing (R)-3,4-epoxy-1-butanol represented by the formula 1 comprises the steps of: reduction of (S)-3-alkyl or arylsulfonyloxy-butyrolactone of the formula 2 to prepare 2-sulfonyloxy-1,4-butanediol of the formula 3; and epoxidation of the compound of the formula 3 in the presence of base, wherein R is C1-C12 alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl; the reduction is carried out by using a boron metal compound as a reducing agent; the boron metal compound is selected from NaBH4 and Ca(BH4)2; the reduction temperature is -10 to 40 deg. C; and the epoxidation temperature is 0 to 50 deg. C.
