The procedure for controlling an NOx detector (8,8',9,10) in an IC engine exhaust gas system consists of a validation stage in at least one operating parameter of the detector is determined and compared with associated validation values, and a measurement stage in which a signal from the detector is corrected to take account of the displacement in the measuring interval. The measuring interval is located within the operating range of a feed cut-out phase and begins after a predetermined delay time, and the start and duration of the validation interval is selected according to a function of the detector behavior in a transitional mode, and lasts at least 5 seconds, and preferably 10 seconds, with a maximum duration of 30-60 seconds, and the detector function can be the exhaust gas temperature, a variation in temperature or the lambda value of exhaust gases.
