PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent freezing of an electrolyte solution and a deformation and breakage of a battery jar resulting therefrom when a control valve type lead storage battery with lowered concentration of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte solution for improving charging acceptability at regenerative charging is used in an intermediate state of charge of about 50% to 90%. SOLUTION: The lead storage battery comprises an electrode plate group housed in a battery jar. The electrode plate group is composed of a mat separator made of glass fiber or synthetic resin fiber, a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate. The battery does not substantially hold an electrolyte solution freeing from the electrode plate group. In a state of housing the electrode plate group in the battery jar, the ratio of Ve/V, where V is the vacancy volume of the mat separator and Ve is the volume of the electrolyte solution impregnated and retained in the mat separator, is set to 0.92 or less, and the sulfuric acid concentration in the electrolyte solution is set to 26.0-37.0 mass %.
