PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize exposure control of high precision, while the time lag from the time when operation input of start of image processing is performed until the time when main exposure processing is executed is maintained at a low level. SOLUTION: An indication of photographing preparation start is received, and an exposure control value for executing adequate exposure control is calculated by an exposure arithmetic means 122. On the basis of the exposure control value calculated by the exposure arithmetic means 122, exposure control is performed and an image is picked up. It is decided whether the exposure control value is calculated by the arithmetic means 122, from the time when the indication of photographing preparation start is received until the time when an indication of photographing start is received.
