PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound which exhibits excellent lubricity under a wide environment range from the ordinary temperature environment to higher temperature high humidity environment. SOLUTION: A fluorine-containing compound represented by the general formula (a) [R1and R2are each a fluoroalkyl, a fluoroether or fluoropolyether; (r) is an integer of 1 to 20] and having a 1705 cm-1absorption peak for a carboxylic acid and a 1740 cm-1absorption peak for an ester in infrared absorption spectroscopy. A lubricant contains the compound. A magnetic recording medium contains the lubricant in a lubricating layer. And the method for producing the magnetic recording medium comprises a process for using a coating solution prepared by dissolving the lubricant in a specific solvent to form the lubricant layer.
