PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new organic solvent-soluble azo-based compound. SOLUTION: The new azo-based compound is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SB>1</SB>is hydrogen, an alkyl group, a halogen atom, a halogenated alkyl group or a carboalkoxy group; and R<SB>2</SB>is an alkyl group or an alkyl ether group). The compound can be used as a coloring material of a dye because the compound exhibits a yellow color and is soluble in an organic solvent. The compound is also useful as a light-emitting layer of an organic EL element because the compound exhibits yellow fluorescence. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
