PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of manufacturing a magnetic recording and reproducing device having a high SNR and suitable for high recording density. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium having at least a non- magnetic substrate, a non-magnetic base layer, a magnetic layer and a protective layer in this order, the non-magnetic base layer is formed by using a Ta-Co based alloy or a Ta-Co-B based alloy. In the Ta-Co based alloy, the concentration of Co is in the range of 10 to 30 at.%. In the Ta-Co-B based alloy, the concentration of Co is in the range of 10 to 30 at.% and the concentration of B is≤5 at.%. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
