A phenolic binder comprising: a) a premix of a urea modified phenol-formaldehyde resole resin; b) a curing agent; c) an additive selected from at least one of melamine and melamine derivative; and d) ammonium lignosulfate. Also described is a method for reducing gaseous emissions in the manufacture of fibrous insulating materials.
