PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eddy current speed reducer which is superior in magnetic efficiency and is possible of size reduction and can suppress the temperature rise of a braking disc, even when it is used continuously over a long time. SOLUTION: This is a 'magnet pole face countering system' or a 'pole- pieceless system' of eddy current speed reducer; herein a region without arrangement of a permanent magnet is provided in a part, in the circumferential direction of a retaining ring, and a nozzle for blowing a coolant against the heat- generating part of the braking disc is provided at the end face of a guide tube opposed to this region. Moreover, this is a braking disc cooling method which uses this device, where the relation with average cooling capacityα(kcal/m<SP>2</SP>hr°C) satisfies the following expression (a), when the angular range of nozzle set around a rotary shaft is defined asθ(°); (θ/360)×α≥150...(a).
