The sewage treatment circulates the sewage through a number of different bio-conversion zones in succession. A number of baskets (3) of a synthetic material or carbon fibers contain supports for bacteria, where the sewage drifts through downwards by gravity into a basin (1'). The sewage is recirculated by an immersed pump (7a) in the basin to overhead sprays (7c). One basket section (3a) has an aerobic action over the basin, and one basket section (3b) is immersed in the basin for an anaerobic action. The bacteria support and the basin are in contact with the ambient atmosphere, so that the aerobic section is aerated by natural convection, and the oxygenation of the bath is through oxygen dissolving on its surface.
