The invention relates to a process and to an installation for producing liquid sulphur dioxide and an aqueous solution of sulphur dioxide by burning ground petrochemical sulphur of 99.9 % purity in a plant (R4) in a pure oxygen flow. The burning takes place at a temperature ranging from 280 ...450 C and a pressure of 0.7 to 1.5 X 10 ^ (5) N/m^ (2). The resulting gases are cooled down suddenly to 25 C, compressed by means of a compressor (C9) and cooled again, the sulphur dioxide being liquefied in the vessel (VII), and the unburned oxygen being recirculated in a burning phases.
