Eddy currents can be formed when a magnetic field (17) passes through a rotor (10, 11) of a vehicle electromagnetic retarder perpendicularly to a rotational direction (18) of said rotor. These eddy currents moreover become more powerful the more said magnetic field tends to be perpendicular to the rotor rotational direction. However, the current electromagnetic retarders are made such that only a small region of the rotor is run through by said eddy currents. In order to optimize the retarding power generated by said eddy currents, the invention proposes to increase said region of eddy currents (19) in the rotor by providing at least one magnetic field generating coil (13, 14) such that the magnetic field formed by said coil constitutes a radial configuration relative to an axis of the rotor (16).
