The method involves defining an estimated lambda signal starting from operating parameters and detecting a measured lambda signal with a sensor, whereby the time profiles of the estimated and measured lambda signals are matched to each other and correcting an air mass signal and/or a fuel mass signal starting from the comparison of the matched lambda signals.
