The gripper has a central rotary member (3) which can be rotated by a vertical centre axis (2) set on a base member (1). Either side of the central rotary member are outer rotary members (5a, 5b) which can be turned by means of outer axes (4a, 4b). The gripper holders (7a, 7b) rotate on the outer rotary members and can be moved parallel to the base from the base outwards and back in again. The gripper holders are pressed against the object to be held and the pressure maintained through a locking device which is opened when the object is to be released. In order to open the gripper the central rotary member and /or outer rotary members are rotated by a suitable mechanism.
