A sandwich maker with microwave heating (10) comprises a lower platen (22, 26) extending from a base (26), an opposing upper platen (24, 28) extending from an upper plate (42), a means (30, 32) for heating the platens, a microwave power source (11) connected to a radiating element (15) directed at the platens disposed within a microwave shield (14) forming a cooking chamber. Optionally, the sandwich maker comprises a plurality of platens. A handle (21) coupled to the upper plate causes the platens to come together and retract. Heating the platens causes the sandwich bread to toast while the microwave power heats the internal ingredients. A method for preparing a sandwich comprises the steps of providing a cooking chamber, inserting the sandwich into the cooking chamber, closing the cooking chamber, applying conductive heat directly to the bread slices while simultaneously applying microwave energy, and thereafter, removing the processed sandwich.
