A flag holder designed to reduce the fraying of the trailing edge of a flag (10) supports a flag with an upper fitting (4, 6) and a lower fitting (20). The upper fitting may be fixed (4) with respect to the flagpole (1) or, if desired, may rotate (53) with respect to the flagpole (1). However, the uppe r fitting may not reciprocate with respect to the flagpole (1). The lower fitting (20) may freely reciprocate with respect to the flagpole (1) and, if desired, may be rotatable with respect to the flagpole (1). As soon as wind conditions exceed a desired threshold, the lower fitting (20) begins to rise up the flagpole (1), moved by flexing of the flag, until it arrives at the location of the upper fitting (4, 6, 53), causing the body of the flag to assume an elongated generally U-shaped configuration which drastically reduc es the snapping effect that would otherwise cause fraying of the downstream edg e (14) of the flag. As soon as wind conditions reduce, the lower fitting (20) automatically lowers, causing the flag (10) to be fully opened again.</SDOAB >
