Plastics coated paper cups are made by inserting the flanged base (1b) inside the tapered sleeve (1a) forming the sides, flanging over the bottom of the sleeve and compressing the double fold while heat is applied to seal the joint. A machine for carrying out this operation has a heated collar (2) inside which a tapered block (1c) is forced downwards from above, while a set of segmented jaws (5) is expanded sideways from underneath to form a counter pressure system while at the same time making the double fold and seal being heated. These jaws are mounted on top of swinging arms (4) mounted on a horizontal support plate (3). The heating ring (2) is supported by rods also mounted on this plate (3). The pivots of the arms are positioned immediately above this plate. The toggle mechanism (6a, 6b) is supported on a spindle also mounted on this plate, between the swinging arms. |
