A page message containing a service reference identifier (SR ID) is transmitted and the response message used by the base station to determine whether to terminate or re-connect dormant data services to a mobile. The base station may enter an active mode if the SR ID requests a particular data service, such as ftp or vod, or terminate the connection if the page message indicates that re-connection of the inactive connection is unavailable or rejected. The sleeping link may then be released, saving network resources.
