The arrangement has a test item (PLPN) that replaces a program-controlled unit during emulation. The test item has a first program-controlled unit (PPG1) containing only some of the components of the replaced unit and a second (PPG2) containing the remainder. The first unit contains a controller that monitors for access being required to a component not present in the first unit and arranging access to the second unit when this is the case.
