A method for manufacturing an optical fiber comprises the steps of heating a glass rod, which is a first preform of the optical fiber, elongating the heated glass rod to generate a second preform, and further heating and drawing the second preform to a filament-like form to generate the optical fiber, wherein the elongating speed is controlled at a plurality of locations along axial direction of the glass rod based on the diameter at the plurality of locations along axial direction of the glass rod and the heating is concrolled based on the average value of the diameter at the plurality of locations of the glass rod.
