PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to electrolyze steam while suppressing the deterioration of electrodes by impressing voltage in the direction reverse from the impressed voltage at prescribed intervals at the time of impressing the voltage to a cell holding a solid electrolyte with the electrodes. SOLUTION: When a solid electrolyte type fuel battery is subjected to electrolytic operation, the voltage acting in the direction to accelerate the reduction reaction of the electrode (hydrogen electrode) existing under a reducing atmosphere of gaseous hydrogen, etc., is impressed to the hydrogen electrode and the voltage acting in the direction of accelerating the oxidation reaction of the electrode (oxygen electrode) existing under a oxidizing atmosphere of gaseous oxygen is impressed on the oxygen electrode and, therefore, these electrodes are early deteriorated. When the electrolytic operation is changed over to power generation operation during the course when the electric resistance is gradually increased by the electrolytic operation, these electrodes are restored near to the initial size only after the electric resistance begins to diminish. When, the electric resistance is increased as large as to exceed the prescribed value by the electrolytic operation, the electric resistance does not diminish too small even if the operation is changed over to the power generation operation. |
