PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool state detecting device for surely detecting the state of a tool even in process of machining, and even when a load is small. SOLUTION: One end of an output terminal of a high frequency signal output device 7 is connected to a transmission side electrode 9, and the other end is connected to the head 2 of a main spindle device 1, and a high frequency signal is radiated to a projecting part 3a of a spindle 3. The high frequency signal is received by a receiving coil 15 of an electric field strength meter 14, and the breakage of the tool 6 is detected on the basis of a relative displacement state between the tool 6 and a workpiece 54 and received electric field strength indicated by the electric field strength meter 14.
