Liquid samples from containers 36 are introduced successively through sampling tube 7 into cell 3 of an analysing device by means of piston pump 1, each sample being returned to its container after analysis, by a method wherein the sampling tube 7 is introduced into the liquid in a container 36 after the piston has performed a predetermined part of the retraction stroke, and after the analysis the piston is advanced by a predetermined distance after the liquid has been forced out of cell 3, back into its sample container. The sampling tube is preferably removed from the liquid in the container before completion of the advancing stroke of the pump. The analysing device may carry out determinations of fluorescence, optical absorption pH. In the apparatus shown, a motor rotates shaft 16 on which are mounted cam 45, which operates piston 39; arm 19, which carries roller 20 bearing against cam 21, cam 21 moving rocking lever 22 and hence slide 28 to make leaf spring 33 engage one of slots 38 in turntable 37, to bring the next sample container into position under sampling tube 7; the arm 15, which carries roller 14 co-operating with cam plate 13 carrying block 8 and the sampling tube 7, cam 13 preferably being shaped to allow abrupt descent of 'the sampling tube into a sample container. The sampling tube is preferably of polytetrafluorethylene. |
