PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent disturbance to the communication of other ONUs (optical network units) when a wrong ONU is connected to a PON (passive optical network).

SOLUTION: In a communication system has the PON, a master station (EPON-OLT1 (Ethernet (R) passive optical network-optical line termination)) and a plurality of slave stations (EPON-ONU2) are connected via star couplers 3, and single-core/bi-directional communication is realized by application of a WDM technique. In this PON, in order that the EPON-ONU2 judges the effectiveness of the connection to the corresponding PON, the EPON-OLT1 displays interface version type information 100 indicating connection conditions in a maintenance frame 45 which is set in order to monitor and control the EPON-ONU2.
