<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a specified image component when conducting enhancement processing on an image component of a frequency band. <P>SOLUTION: An image signal is separated into the plurality of frequency band image components having a directional characteristic to be enhanced based on the directional characteristic. When an enhancement-processed object or non-objective concentrated along a direction exists, only the image component thereof is enhanced or restrained from being enhanced.
