PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that it is difficult to control the plane of polarization of laser light emitted from a surface emission semiconductor laser to a specified orientation and the plane of polarization is varied depending on an optical output or an environmental temperature and causes switching. SOLUTION: The surface emission semiconductor laser has such a structure as a strain adding part 19 is arranged contiguously to a resonator 10B. The strain adding part 19 applies anisotropic stress to the resonator 10B thus causing the polarization dependency of birefringence and a gain in a resonator 10A.
