<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can suppress formation of an abnormal image due to foreign matter such as dust as much as possible while securing a fast read by reading a moving document. <P>SOLUTION: A digital copying machine is equipped with an automatic document feeder 6, a dust decision part 176, and a CPU 171 and the dust decision part 176 adds inputted signals by pixels in a document feed direction (vertical scanning direction) and decides that dust sticks on a pixel part when the addition result exceeds a certain level. Once the dust decision part 176 detects an abnormal image due to dust during an image read on the document movement basis, the CPU 171 interrupts the read operation of moving document and switches the read mode to a document fixation read.
