PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power supply unit equipped with a shunt circuit, wherein the occurrence of a malfunction may be prevented by detecting an abnormality in the shunt circuit. SOLUTION: The power supply unit comprises a rectifier circuit 11, a switching power circuit 12, a shunt circuit 13, and an abnormality detecting circuit 16, and it supplies power to a load circuit 14 as well as to a microcomputer 15. The microcomputer 15 switches between a standby state and a drive state of the load 14 (TV ON if the load is a television set). If an abnormality occurs in a relay RL1, which shorts an input resistor R1, and opens it, the abnormality is detected in the abnormality detecting circuit 16 and notified to the microcomputer 15.
