PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image read method which can always make a read at a scanning speed at which efficiency is high and to provide an image read control program and a recording medium therefor. SOLUTION: A capacity detecting means is made to detect whether the empty capacity of an image storage means is less than a previously set value (S609). When the empty capacity is less than the specified value, a scanning operation is interrupted and the interruption position is stored in a position storage means (S611). A driving system returns an image read means to the position where the read is started (S612). Then a scanning speed stored in a scanning speed storage means is decreased by a specified quantity (S613). The driving system moves the image read means at the varied scanning speed from the position where the read is started (S614). Therefore, as the scanning operation is repeated, a preferable scanning speed among scanning speeds at which the empty capacity of the image storage means exceeds the specified value is reached and the scanning operation is carried out thereafter at this speed.
