PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave element which has excellent filter characteristics and high exciting efficiency. SOLUTION: A plurality of surface acoustic wave resonators (12<SB>1</SB>-12<SB>4</SB>, 13<SB>1</SB>, 13<SB>2</SB>) formed on a piezoelectric board (11) are connected in a ladder in the surface acoustic wave element. The piezoelectric board includes polarization reverse areas (14<SB>1</SB>-14<SB>4</SB>), and one of the serial resonators or parallel resonators in the surface acoustic wave resonators are formed on the polarization reverse areas. Thus, lowering of the exciting efficiency as a whole is minimized, so that the excellent filter characteristics, concretely, a temperature characteristic and a passage characteristic are provided.
