PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor device having a high-performance and high-speed integrated circuit, which uses low-cost glass substrates and can respond to the increase of the amount of information.

SOLUTION: Various circuits constituting an integrated circuit are formed on a plurality of glass substrates and the transmission of signals between the glass substrates is performed by so-called optical interconnection using optical signals. In concrete terms, a light emitting element is provided on the output side of a circuit of an upper stage formed on one glass substrate and a photoreceptor is formed on the input side of a circuit of a subsequent stage formed on another glass substrate in such a way that it is opposed to the light emitting element. Electrical signals outputted from the circuit of the upper stage are converted into optical signals and outputted from the light emitting element. The optical signals are converted into electrical signals by the photoreceptor and are inputted to the circuit of the subsequent stage.
