PURPOSE: A device for duplexing a simplex switch of an ATM exchange and an operation method therefor are provided to apply multiplexed communication signals to the simplex switch, and to demultiplex communication signals of the simplex switch to transmit the demultiplexed signals to subscribers, thereby reducing size and obtaining reliability in data transmissions. CONSTITUTION: A controller(55) monitors and controls functions of an ATM exchange, and controls a call setup of a simplex switch(60). The first subscriber manager(45) receives and outputs a control signal of the controller(55), receives a switch operation result, and applies the result to the controller(55). The simplex switch(60) assigns a communication port(62) between subscribers(65) in a normal state by the control signal to set a call, and assigns a reserved port(64) by the control signal when the call has an error, then sets the call. An N subscriber manager(35) multiplexes signals applied from the subscribers(65) to apply the multiplexed signals to the simplex switch(60), and demultiplexes signals applied from the switch(60) to transmit the demultiplexed signals to the subscribers(65).
