A contra-flow brandy still assembly (1) and a rectification unit (2) which are linked by a sheet metal helix (7) winding round an axis (8') within a tube (8, 9) to form an ascending helical passage (10). The sheet metal helix is fabricated from a material which has good thermal conduction characteristics. The passage (10) is chosen in accordance with the width and pitch of the sheet metal (7). The helical sheet metal is slightly warmer than the draining fluid and is heated by rising vapor.
