1,186,284. Tandem axle suspensions; vehicle steering linkage. R. F. WHITEHEAD. 20 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23953/68. Headings B7D and B7H. A bogie structure for the steerable front wheels of a vehicle includes a leading axle 10 and a trailing axle 11 each carrying a pair of stub axles at its ends, a trunnion 12 rigidly secured to two mountings (41), 41A attachable to a vehicle chassis 19/19A, a hub rotatably mounted on each end of the trunnion 12 and to which is rigidly secured a leaf spring 44, 44A which extends perpendicularly to, and bears at its ends on, the two axles 10, 11, and a steering linkage comprising a pair of parallel swing arms 63, 65 which are pivotably mounted on bearings 64, 66 securable to the chassis above one end of the trunnion 12, two drag links 78, 82 of equal length joining each swing area to a respective steering arm 70, 71, a link 67 interconnecting the swing arms 63, 65 and a link 62 for connecting one of the swing arms 63 with an operative element 60 of a steering mechanism. The link 67 may be parallel or inclined to the plane through the pivot axes of the swing arms. The leading axle 10 is located from the trunnion 12 by four parallel equal length radius rods 34, 34A, (35), 35A arranged two above and two below a plane through the trunnion axis and the axle and the trailing axle is located by a single lower radius rod (24), (Fig. 4, not shown) and a pair of upper radius rods (33), 33A. The rods may diverge slightly in plan and have rubber bushed ends. |
